Strong Safety

I chose this photo for my Facebook cover for a couple of reasons. First, to honor Andre Waters, Philadelphia Eagles Strong Safety #20 who was not just my all-time favorite player, he was a man I admired on and off the field. He was one of the most feared hitters in the NFL because of his propensity to take down any offensive player coming across. He earned the nickname ‘Dirty’ because he was exceptionally tough, not because he was mean. His strength and tenacity made him a player to remember!

One day while I was living in south Jersey, I had the great pleasure and honor to meet him. I had gone to Marietta’s for Italian water ice and there he was!! I could hardly believe it when I saw him there and I actually got to talk to him. I had no idea we lived in the same town! I was so excited, nervous, and awestruck, it’s a wonder I was able to ask for his autograph. He was so gracious and along with his autograph, he wrote out John 3:16. In talking with him, I learned his faith was strong, too! I always hoped I would see him again but I never did. When I found out he had taken his own life, I was shocked and so sad. It was determined that from hundreds of hard-hitting tackles and several concussions, he suffered brain damage that resulted in depression. Doing what he loved came with a price that was too much to bear.

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

Although he’s no longer here, his hard work, his determination and his faith gave him a spiritual quality that inspires me today. Now you know the reason behind the quote within the image. I’d like to know what inspires you or how I might help if you’re in need. To comment confidentially, click on Contact at the top of the Home page or leave a comment below.

  • Wow, I knew he was your favorite football player but had no idea he committed suicide. Having been friends with someone who has done the same, I saw first hand that the depression doesn’t end there. It’s just transferred to those who loved and cared about you 💔
