Make Your Day

How many times have your plans needed to be reset because of someone else’s? It happens and you have to back up and punt. What’s the next play? I’ve been in that position a lot, we all have. I’m not going to say put a smile on your face and get busy. That’s inconsiderate and it’s your day – not mine. BUT, last Saturday I had to decide what kind of day it was going to be in spite of not being able to do what I wanted. I did choose to tackle the housework (UNFUN unless it’s outside,) so I could at least feel good about what I accomplished. I got a little break when I went to the grocery store and saw a man with a table set up out front. It was an Outreach Ministry, “HOUSING 4 OUR HEROES.” The few minutes I spent with him were such a blessing and a reminder of how fortunate we are to have a beautiful home and great neighbors! The purpose of their program is to help “find and create permanent housing solutions for our veterans who are struggling with any life controlling issues: PTSD – drug abuse – alcohol abuse – financial instability – depression – suicide – homelessness.” It’s so hard to imagine how people with great courage, perseverance and resolve can end up with any of those issues. First of all, I have no idea what they’ve seen or had to endure and second, it’s not my place to ask. It is only my place to help however I can. That makes my day!

“And don’t forget to do good and to share with those in need. These are sacrifices that please God.” Hebrews 13:16

Sunday morning, I was debating whether or not to go to church. I wasn’t in a very good mood but decided that’s a good reason to go and hear what I needed to hear. I’m glad I went! The sermon was about “Fruits of the Spirit.” Before the Pastor got started, the Sunday school kids were asked what different “fruits” meant. The little ones shared examples of goodness, kindness, love and even self-control. Just precious! I didn’t learn something new but I listened, prayed and left fulfilled. That made my day!

Jesus said, “I am the vine, you are the branches, He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.” John 15:5

So, what are the “Fruits of the Spirit?” The Fruit of the Holy Spirit is a biblical term that sums up nine attributes of one who’s living in accord with the Holy Spirit, according to Galatians 5. Trying to instill these characteristics in our lives on our own is like trying to grow apples without the tree. It just can’t be done. The fruit of the Spirit must be grown by the Holy Spirit in our lives. He is the one who does the work in us and produces His fruit. So instead of trying extra hard to be good, we must instead focus on our relationship with God. We have to spend time with Him in prayer and seek Him through His Word. As we grow closer to Him each day, He will work in us and develop those attributes that others will see. He will help us be more patient, kind, good, and humble, and we will have more self-control. Each attribute is a gift or blessing to be shared. Do it and make your day!

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control…” Galatians 5: 22-23
