Uncommon Valor

On February 23rd, 75 years ago, the US flag was raised on Iwo Jima. The US Marines took the island’s highest peak and most strategic position. However, the battle expected to last a couple of days didn’t end until March 26th, 1945. It was a crucial victory and one of the final steps to finishing World War II.

“The battle of Iwo Island has been won. The United States Marines by their individual and collective courage have conquered a base which is as necessary to us in our continuing forward movement toward final victory as it was vital to the enemy in staving off ultimate defeat. By their victory, the 3rd, 4th and 5th Marine Divisions and other units of the Fifth Amphibious Corps have made an accounting to their country which only history will be able to value fully. Among the Americans who served on Iwo Island, uncommon valor was a common virtue.”

Admiral Chester W. Nimitz

Military service requires tremendous perseverance. One must be disciplined, determined, dedicated and downright tough but, not without honor and compassion. Admiral William H. McRaven addressed the graduating class of the University of Texas at Austin on their commencement day in 2014. He found inspiration in their slogan, “What starts here changes the world.” He shared the wise, practical and encouraging lessons he learned through SEAL training and how anyone can apply the ten principles to change for the better.

His speech went viral! Admiral McRaven built on those key notes in his book, Make Your Bed, published in 2017. When I saw an interview with him on CBS This Morning, I couldn’t wait to get the book. When I started reading, I didn’t want to stop! This is one book that really did have a powerful effect on me. I have recommended this book to so many people and firmly believe if more people would follow the principles, we would not just have a better country but a positive impact on the world!! The following is a list of the chapters to give you a snapshot of the lessons.

  • Start Your Day with a Task Completed
  • You Can’t Go It Alone
  • Only the Size of Your Heart Matters
  • Life’s Not Fair – Drive On!
  • Failure Can Make You Stronger
  • You Must Dare Greatly
  • Stand Up to the Bullies
  • Rise to the Occasion
  • Give People Hope
  • Never, Ever Quit!

It’s who I aspire to be: someone who has a positive impact; someone who builds a group that’s principled, super strong, hopeful, determined and able to win in the most difficult challenges. Thank you, Admiral McRaven for your words, inspiration and excellent example!
